Frequently Asked Questions
What type of jacket do I need for NZ tramping?
Most NZ trampers need at least two jackets: a waterproof rain jacket (Peak XV Tornado or Rab Kangri GTX) for wet weather, and an insulated jacket (Rab Microlight Alpine or Cirrus Flex) for warmth at rest and in camp. A fleece or softshell is a useful third layer for variable conditions. The exact combination depends on your route, season, and how cold you run.
What's the difference between softshell and hardshell jackets?
A hardshell is fully waterproof with taped seams — designed for sustained rain and wind. A softshell is wind-resistant and water-resistant (not waterproof) with stretch construction — designed for breathability and movement in active conditions. For NZ tramping: always carry a hardshell for rain; a softshell is a useful additional layer in mixed conditions.
