Seam Sealants and Repair Tape for Waterproof Gear
Every stitch through a waterproof fabric creates a potential entry point for water. Seam sealing fills and seals those puncture points, keeping moisture out at the seams — which are the most common weak point in tents, tarps, rain jackets and bivy bags. Dwights stocks seam sealants and seam tape for maintaining and restoring waterproof gear.
Liquid seam sealants are applied by brush or nozzle to the inside of stitched seams. They're the go-to for tent floors, fly seams and any join where water pooling or sustained exposure is likely. Seam grip is the most well-known product in this category and is compatible with most fabrics including silnylon, polyurethane-coated nylons and Gore-Tex. Seam tape is a peel-and-press option that works well for fast field repairs and for non-sewn joins.
If you're re-sealing a tent that has seen several seasons of use, it's worth doing the full fly and floor seams before a major trip. A couple of hours of prep work at home is far better than a wet night in the field.
