Gaiters and crampons are the two most important pieces of kit for NZ alpine travel on snow and ice. Gaiters protect your lower leg and boot from snow, mud, and scree; crampons give you traction on ice and hard snow. For any route above the snowline or in winter conditions, both are standard equipment.

For detailed information on crampons — including the important C1/C2/C3 compatibility guide — see our dedicated crampons collection. For gaiters, see below.

      Gaiters

Gaiters wrap around your lower leg and boot to keep snow, debris, and moisture out. The right gaiter depends on the conditions:

      • Alpine/expedition gaiters: Full-height, robust construction for deep snow, alpine terrain, and serious winter use. Waterproof fabric, sturdy instep strap, and zip or Velcro closure. Essential for NZ winter tramping and mountaineering.
      • Trail gaiters: Lower-profile and lighter — covers the ankle and lower boot. Keeps debris, mud, and light snow out of your boots on well-formed tracks. Good for three-season NZ tramping without full alpine conditions.
      • Microspikes: Not crampons — lightweight traction devices for icy paths and light snow where full crampons are overkill. Useful for NZ winter day walks on iced-over tracks.

      Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need gaiters for NZ tramping?

For three-season tramping on well-formed tracks, no — gaiters are unnecessary and just add weight. For winter tramping, alpine routes, and any track involving significant snow travel, gaiters are important kit. Low-profile trail gaiters are also worth considering for NZ bush tracks in wet conditions — they keep mud and debris out of your boots, reducing wear on your socks and boot lining. For summer Great Walks on the main tracks, skip the gaiters.

What's the difference between gaiters and crampons?

Completely different items. Gaiters are fabric covers for your lower leg and boot — they keep snow, mud, and debris out but provide no traction. Crampons are metal spikes that attach to your boot sole — they provide traction on ice and hard snow but don't protect against snow ingress. For serious NZ alpine travel, you typically need both: gaiters to keep snow out, crampons to keep you upright on the terrain.

How do I fit gaiters correctly?

Gaiters should fit snugly around the boot and lower leg without excess material bunching. The instep strap runs under the boot and hooks under the sole — ensure it sits in the groove between heel and ball and is tight enough to keep the gaiter from riding up. The top of the gaiter should sit comfortably around your calf without cutting off circulation. Most gaiters have a hook at the front that attaches to your boot lace for additional security.
