Camping Stretcher or Air Mattress: How to Choose
A stretcher raises the sleeper on a tensioned surface; an air mattress provides adjustable cushioning closer to the floor. Choose by tent space, transport, insulation, mobility and the number of nights rather than comfort claims alone.
Camping stretchers
A stretcher can make getting in and out of bed easier and keeps bedding above minor floor moisture and campsite dirt. The frame creates a firm sleeping surface and useful space underneath on suitable models. It can also be long, heavy and awkward to fit through a tent door.
Check the open dimensions, rated capacity and foot design. Protect the tent floor where the manufacturer recommends it and confirm that the stretcher will not press into sloping walls or block an exit.
Air mattresses
An air mattress packs smaller than many framed stretchers and can offer adjustable firmness. It needs a compatible pump and can lose pressure through temperature change, valve leakage or a puncture. Confirm the repair method and test it before the trip.
Air volume does not automatically provide enough insulation for cold conditions. If warmth matters, check the model’s insulation information and the complete sleep system rather than assuming mattress thickness is sufficient.
Measure the tent first
- Compare the bed’s full length, width and height with the usable tent floor.
- Allow space to open doors, access bags and move around without touching wet walls.
- Check that a raised bed remains clear of sloping fabric and windows.
- For two sleepers, test whether movement transfers across the surface.
Consider a combined setup
A compatible insulated mat can sometimes be used on a stretcher, combining elevation with cushioning and insulation. Confirm dimensions, surface grip and manufacturer guidance so the layers remain stable.
Choose for transport and routine
A stretcher often suits vehicle-based camping where packed length and weight are manageable. An air mattress may suit campers who prioritise compact storage and adjustable firmness. Whichever you choose, practise setup, carry the required pump or parts and dry it before storage.
