Water Purification and Filtration for NZ Tramping

New Zealand's rivers and streams look clean, but giardia and other waterborne pathogens are present in many backcountry water sources — including apparently pristine alpine streams. Treating your water is a standard practice for trampers, and Dwights stocks a full range of filtration and purification solutions to suit different trip lengths and travel styles.

Pump filters like the MSR MiniWorks or Katadyn Hiker are reliable workhorses for medium to long trips where you need to filter water for a group. Squeeze filters and gravity filters offer lighter and more hands-free alternatives. UV pens (like the SteriPen) are fast and lightweight but require batteries and clear water to be effective. Chemical treatments (iodine or chlorine tablets) are the lightest backup option, useful as an emergency supply even if you carry a filter as your primary method.

For NZ-specific conditions, a filter that removes protozoa (including giardia cysts) is the minimum requirement. Virus filtration is less critical in NZ backcountry but becomes important when travelling internationally.
