How to Choose a Sleeping Bag Liner

A sleeping bag liner can help keep the inside of a sleeping bag cleaner and may change how the sleep system feels. Choose one by material, shape, packed size and care rather than assuming every liner adds the same amount of warmth.

Decide what you want the liner to do

  • Keep the bag cleaner: a washable layer can reduce direct contact between the sleeper and the bag.
  • Improve next-to-skin comfort: material and seam placement affect feel.
  • Provide a light standalone layer: some liners can be useful in warm accommodation, subject to the conditions.
  • Adjust the sleep system: a liner may change comfort, but it does not replace a sleeping bag and mat suited to the expected temperature.

Compare materials

Synthetic fabrics are generally straightforward to wash and can dry quickly. Cotton can feel familiar but is often heavier and slower to dry. Silk options can pack very small, while insulated or brushed liners tend to trade extra bulk for a warmer feel. Check the actual fabric, weight and care label for the model being considered.

Check shape and fit

Match the liner to the sleeping bag shape. A rectangular liner provides room but may bunch inside a close-fitting mummy bag. Check length, shoulder width, foot shape and how easily the opening can be used during the night.

Treat warmth figures carefully

Warmth claims are not interchangeable between manufacturers or test methods. A liner cannot correct an unsuitable sleeping bag, an inadequately insulated mat or poor campsite selection. Plan the complete sleep system for the conditions and treat any claimed temperature addition as model-specific information, not a guaranteed result.

Consider washing and drying

Follow the care label, dry the liner fully before storage and make sure dyes, detergents or fabric treatments are compatible with the sleeping bag. A liner is most useful when it is easy enough to wash that it will actually be used regularly.
