Rakiura Track Packing List and Planning Guide
Plan for wet ground and island logistics
The Rakiura Track is a three-day loop, but transport to Stewart Island/Rakiura, bookings and local conditions still need deliberate planning. Check the current DOC Rakiura Track page, alerts, forecast and transport immediately before travel. Huts and campsites require advance booking throughout the year.
Pack around the conditions
Expect mud and rain rather than treating them as exceptions. Use a waterproof pack liner, reliable rainwear, quick-drying walking layers and a separate dry set for the hut or campsite. Footwear should fit well and provide dependable grip on wet, uneven ground.
- Sleeping bag and warm night clothing.
- Food for the itinerary plus a delay margin.
- Cooking equipment confirmed against the booked facilities.
- Head torch, first aid, navigation and personal medication.
- Insect protection and a repair kit for wet gear.
- A suitable emergency communication device.
Respect wildlife and coastal conditions
Keep food secure, give wildlife space and follow local instructions. Coastal access and boat movements can be tide- or weather-dependent. A red-filtered light is less disruptive if looking for nocturnal wildlife, but the trip plan should never depend on sightings.
Choose equipment by function
Browse current hiking packs, rain jackets and hiking footwear. Test the loaded pack and waterproofing before travelling to the island.
Departure check
Confirm bookings, ferry or flight arrangements, alerts, forecast and the group’s intentions. Carry enough flexibility for transport disruption and changing coastal weather.
