Waterproof Overpants for NZ Weather
Waterproof overpants are one of those items you're glad you packed when the weather turns. Worn over your regular trousers or tights, they provide an immediate waterproof barrier against rain, wind and wet scrub without requiring a full wardrobe change. For trampers, they're a standard kit item for any trip where rain is possible — which, in New Zealand, is most of them.
The key considerations are weight, packability and breathability. Lightweight overpants in a packable nylon or polyester shell are the most popular for tramping, compressing to the size of a fist and weighing as little as 200g. More breathable options using laminated membranes cost more but perform significantly better during aerobic activity, where heat and moisture build-up is a real comfort factor.
Full-length leg zips make overpants much easier to put on and take off over boots, especially in driving rain when you want to be quick about it. Dwights stocks a range of waterproof overpants from entry-level to technical options suited to serious backcountry use in NZ conditions.
